Olamau

The Race

Olamau Race is the Ultimate Outrigger Canoe Challenge in Hawaii. It is a 90 mile open ocean race that will take place over three consecutive days on March 8, 9 and 10, 2012.
Day 1: Maliko Gulch, Maui to Flemings Beach, Maui (21.7 miles)
Day 2: Flemings Beach, Maui to Kaunakakai, Moloka’i (26 miles)
Day 3: Kaluakoi, Moloka’i to Duke Kahanamoku Pier, Waikiki, O’ahu (39 miles)

The Canoe

There are no length, weight or design restrictions on the canoes except that no sails, solar or any other artificial means of propulsion are allowed. Canoes must have an ama and only outrigger paddle blades are permitted, no kayak or double bladed paddles are allowed.

Longtime HCC member and canoe builder Mike Giblin has committed to building HCC a canoe for the race.

The Team

Each team may consist of a maximum of 9 paddlers, with 6 paddlers participating in each leg of the race. No changes to paddler personnel will be permitted during the race, no exceptions.

A group of HCC men have started training for this epic undertaking. They include Kekupa’a Nae’ole, Mike Giblin, Lopaka White, Lee Moyers, Ramone Mullen, Jason Donovan, Matthew Pires, Diego Panza, Dave Quisenberry, JB Guard, Timothy Lara and Kaika Teves.

The Coverage
