Kamali’i
John M. Lake and Kealoha Lake, as police lieutenant and social worker respectively, were aware of Hawaiian children in the Maui community who could benefit from participation in canoe paddling and the canoe club. Because of the Lake’s concern and care, keiki have always been an important focus of the club. Youth membership has always outnumbered adults.
The official Kamali’i Program was established in 1992. Its mission is an echo of the Lake family’s tradition of providing ‘ohana for children of Hawai‘i.
Summer Program (NOW FULL)
The Summer Enrichment Program begins June 7 and is open to approximately 70 youth ages 9-13. The program uses a variety of teaching methods such as classroom instruction, hand-on activities, group activities, games, song, and hula. Participants keep a journal of their lessons which they keep at the conclusion of the summer. Participants very much look forward to the six huaka‘i (excursions) Hawaiian Kamali‘i plans every summer. Before the huaka‘i, the keiki learn appropriate cultural protocols such as oli (chant) and ho‘okupu (ceremonial offering) which are unique for each area. The Kamali’i Program is funded by grants from the County of Maui and by Hawaiian Canoe Club fundraising activities.
