Hawaiian Canoe Club

Members of the Maui County Hawaiian Canoe Association (MCHCA) Board of Directors elected HCC paddler Rulan Waikiki as president for the 2012 season.  She replaces HCC paddler Barbara Querry who served as MCHCA president for six years.  Querry also serves on the HCC Board of Directors.

Waikiki was born and raised in Waiehu, Maui, and is a graduate of Kamehameha Schools Kapalama where her love of paddling began.

After raising 3 children, she started paddling as an adult in 1999, only taking a break for several years to battle (and win) breast cancer.

She serves as an MIL official in both Canoe Paddling and Track and Field.  Most recently she served as an MCHCA land official.  Since 1996 her community involvement also includes Relay For Life which she chaired for two years.  Under her leadership the event won it’s first nationally recognized 5 Star Challenge raising over $100,000.00.

Waikiki is currently married with three adult children and two grandchildren.  She has been a County of Maui employee for 22 years and counting.

Also elected at Sunday’s MCHCA Annual Meeting in Lahaina was William Nill who fills the office of Vice-President.  Nill paddles for Wailea Canoe Club and has served as an MCHCA water official for two years.  He replaces Adam Quinn of Lahaina Canoe Club who served as Vice-President for 2011.

Waikiki and Nill join returning secretary Fiona Van Ammers and treasurer Kelly Leon, both of Lae’ula o Kai Canoe Club.

About MCHCA

MCHCA was formed for the purposes of engaging in charitable, educational, cultural and recreational activities associated with Hawaiian canoeing, including the promotion of outrigger canoe racing and the construction and preservation of authentic Hawai’ian Koa canoes.  MCHCA Board of Directors is compose of one representative from each of Maui County’s nine member canoe clubs.

Noelani Vorhies serves as HCC’s representative.  The alternate is Leimana Spencer.

Come down to Hawaiian Canoe Club on Sunday, November 13 for ‘Ohana Day from 10:00am-3:00pm.

The day will include live music, Hawaiian games, food, paddling, canoe rides, keiki activities, and fun for the entire ‘ohana.

Bring your favorite lawn game, SUP boards,  OC1/OC2, kayak, beach blankets, chairs, and umbrellas.

All members of your ‘ohana are welcomed, even if they don’t paddle.

We hope you will join us for a day of no work and all play!

Scholarship Guidelines

Purpose: To provide financial assistance to students pursuing a higher education after High School.

Eligibility: 1) Be a current resident of Maui County currently enrolled as a senior in High School.
2) Be an active member for at least two years in a MCHCA member club.

Awards: The scholarship award will be granted on an individual basis, the amount to be determined according to the number of applicants. Award recipient will be announced at the MCHCA County Championship Regatta on July 23, 2011.

Applications: Applications will be accepted ONLY if ALL of the following documents at submitted:

1)  A completed application form.

2)  High School transcript — candidate to be in their senior year.

3)  Two letters of recommendation per the application.

4)  A one-page typed essay answering the question:

“What effect has outrigger canoe paddling had on my life?”

Deadline:        Submit to Official Stand during the Wilmington Regatta on July 9, 2011

5:00am, Thursday, June 30        Parents drop off at Makena Landing
5:30am, Thursday, June 30        Depart Makena Landing for Hakioawa

10:00am, Sunday, July 3              Return to Makena Landing, parents pick up

Packing List *You are allowed one personal bag.  Your tent can be packed in a second bag.

What is Isagenix?
Founded in 2002 with over a billion in sales they were formed with two goals in mind.

Isagenix is a network marketing / health and wellness company, based near Phoenix, Arizona. They have apparently created over 60 millionaires in the past eight years and their payment plan for members (HCC is a member) is generous.

Their product line is extensive; from protein powders to energy drinks to sunscreen and skin care. They seem to have much of what we as athletes already purchase from grocery stores for workouts or recovery. The ingredients are excellent and they sell it to us at wholesale prices and ship it directly to the front door via UPS.

How does it benefit HCC?
If we as members also join Isagenix and purchase their products the club makes money. Basically, all you have to do is eat the food and drink the drinks and the club gets paid. You as members can also make money if you have an interest in the business side of the company.

Does it work?
Several HCC members have been using Isagenix for a few months and have experienced significant weight loss, increased energy, and improved athletic performance.

How can I learn more?
Attend the Team Imua Maui Isagenix Leadership meeting this Sunday, June 26 from 12pm-4pm at the Sheraton Maui Ballroom.  Register here.

HCC will hold their famous Kalua Turkey Sale on Sunday, June 5 from 10:00am to 2:00pm.

Tickets are available at the HCC office at Kahului Harbor or through HCC keiki members.  HCC is asking for a $7 donation for a 1 lbs bowl.

All proceeds of the HCC Kalua Turkey Sale support HCC’s paddling programs.

Registration for the 2011 Summer Hawaiian Kamali’i Enrichment Program & Regatta Season

Open to keiki born on or before 12/31/1999.  Our 10 and under division is full.

Practice for the 2011 regatta season runs May 2-August 5.  The Hawaiian Kamali’i Summer Enrichment Program runs June 7-July 30.

• Copy of birth certificate (or any other government document verifying the keiki’s age and sex)
• $80 regatta dues (cash or check payable to Hawaiian Canoe Club)
• Keiki will also need to take a picture at registration for their paddling ID card

Bus Transportation

Hawaiian Canoe Club partners with MEO to offer free bus transportation to and from our canoe hale to neighborhoods in Central, South, and Upcountry Maui. Complete the MEO form below and return it to HCC.

The 2011 Race Schedule features  7 regular season regattas and 12 Long-Distance Races.  The Maui County Hawaiian Canoe Association is also pleased to host the 2011 HCRA State Canoe Paddling Championships at Hanaka’o'o Beach, Lahaina, Maui on Saturday, August 6.

Spring Season includes Maui Invitational Keiki Regatta plus races on O’ahu

Practice begins Monday, February 7

Grades 4-8: Monday through Friday, 2:45pm-4:00pm

Grades 9-12: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 4:00pm-5:30pm

The Spring Paddling Season season is free, but keiki are responsible for airfare to O’ahu plus entry fees (total cost TBA).
