The mission of HCC is to perpetuate and preserve the art of Hawaiian canoe paddling by providing an environment rooted in traditional Hawaiian values that promote personal growth, character development, and achievement in physical fitness.
This coming Saturday, May 22, 2010 will be the first time the AMAZING show, Ho’omana’o I Na Wa I Huliau, will be shown in Old Wailuku Town at the Historic Iao Theater! Seating begins at 6:30pm.
Ho’omana’o I Na Wa I Huliau is a collection of the images shown in HD on a huge 24ft wide screen, paired with the mana’o of Kupuna Sam Ka’ai, sharing stories and wisdom of the ways of the people of old. Wisdom that still has resonance and applicability in these modern times.
Kumu Hula Kapono’ai Molitau is preparing a one-of-a-kind pre-show journey that will carry you back to a time before outside contact, before the distractions of modern life bombarded us.
After the show will provide a time to kukakuka, talkstory, with the traditional practicioners, Kupuna, and Shane Tegarden, the photographer that brought this vision to life.
Join us in taking this journey to Ka Wa Kahiko, bring your family, your friends, it will be a night not to be missed.
Visit www.kiionakahiko.com for more information.
On February 27, 2010, as the entire state of Hawai’i was under a tsunami warning, over 40 HCC members and supporters headed down to Kahului Harbor to load 20 canoes and 50 OC-1s and transport them to safety in Wailuku.
Many people were at the hale before the sun came up. Then, once the warning was called off, many people showed up to put the canoes away. They worked until the sun went down.
MAHALO NUI LOA to all who came out to kokua. The spirit of the HCC ‘ohana was evident on Saturday, with so many people just showing up ready to do whatever it took for our precious canoes and equipment to be safe.
Check out more photos of the evacuation on our Photos page.

Seven HCC paddlers completed the Steinlager Ka’iwi Channel Solo on Sunday April 19, 2009. More than 90 paddlers from the around the world competed in the event which is considered the world championship of long-distance paddling on one-person canoes (OC-1s).
Former HCC paddler Kai Barlett finished 1st overall crossing the finished line in 5:12:22. His wife, current HCC paddler Lauren Bartlett, was the first wahine finisher crossing the line in 6:03: 47 (28th overall). Lauren now owns a record 6 Ka’iwi Channel OC-1 Solo titles.
Paddlers reported strong headwinds and a mellow Ka’iwi Channel making it a physically and mentally exhausting crossing. The Honolulu Advertiser reported the winning times were the slowest in the 15-year history of the current course.
Congratulations to all who successful completed this year’s MoloSolo!
